The wider world of Lions

Named after the founder of Lions, the Melvin Jones is one of the highest awards given for outstanding service to Lions

Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club is part of a worldwide organisation. Each individual club is part of a local zone - ours is the Bay and South Lakes area - which is part of the North-West England, 105BN, district. This is in turn part of the Britain and Ireland multiple district, MD105, which in turn is part of Lions International.

The Lions of Britain and Ireland have a royal patron in the Countess of Wessex (pictured left), wife of Prince Edward, who has become a member of Wokingham Club.

This means that more than half a century, 54 years to be precise, after Lions Clubs International was introduced this country at the instigation of the late Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, that Lions MD105 has a a royal patron.

Every club is committed to helping people and organisations within its local community, but also helps regional, national and international appeals for help. While inevitably every organisation has to spend a little on administration, this is kept to the minimum need to enable Lions to operate efficiently - after all they are dealing with other people's money - and every available penny is reserved to help others.

Since 1917, Lions have served the world's population through hard work and commitment to make a difference in the lives of people everywhere. 

With 1,402,645 members serving in more than 44,500 clubs in over 180 countries and areas, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization.

Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. Find out more by visiting Lions Clubs International web site at www.lionsclubs.org. More recently Lions have provided large scale assistance to victims of the Boxing Day 2004 Asian Tsunami disaster.

Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club donated a total of £2,000 to help the tsunami victims, half going to UNICEF and the rest to LCIF - the Lions own international aid fund. Since then it has donated money to help many other international disaster appeals. It has also collected thousands of pairs of unwanted spectacles for a Lions initiative helping improve sight of people in developing countries.

It is not suprising that Lions International believes that ordinary people can achieve amazing things!
