The presidential team for 2008-2009 - Craig Milnes and Rosie Ryder
Who are Lions?
Lions are just ordinary folk who get together and do some extraordinary things. In fact some even say that Lions do amazing things, though we at Lancaster and Morecambe will settle for just helping our local community in every way that we can.
Everyone in Lions started as an ordinary club member, just like ourselves. Some go on to take regional, national and international responsibilities, but most, like many of us, simply enjoy working to help our local communities.
We welcome people of all shapes and sizes, male and female, young and not so young, race and religion, of any job or profession. Some of our members like to work up front, while others, through work, family commitments, or just preference, prefer to work more in the background. In fact it is said that being a Lion can be the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
Over the past few years we have welcomed young people studying at Lancaster University - many from overseas - who will stay with us for the duration of their course.
Fund raising

The Lions tombola, seen here at the 2008 YMCA community festival, is a steady fundraiser.
One of our major roles is fund raising but we also like to be hands on, organising events such as our popular senior citizens' parties. At the other end of the spectrum we have helped many young people's and childrens' organisations.
Of course we have a great time doing this and have our own get togethers and parties, some which have been memorable, or would have been if we could remember!!
Founded in 1968
Our Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club was founded in 1968. It is affiliated to Lions International and works to help its local community, both through direct action and through fund raising for local charities. From time to time the Club also helps both national and international appeals for help.
How do you join Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club?

Welcoming new members at an induction
Just talk to any of our members - our main contacts are listed on this site -or drop in on one of our meetings. One thing is certain, you will be made very welcome. After you have got to know us, and doubtless questioned your own sanity, you can ask to join the club.
With the support of sponsors from among our existing members, you will go through a short induction ceremony in which you agree to the principles of the Lions organisation.
You join when you and the Club feel you are ready. Of course we would like you to join us, but nobody will press you to join. We have many friends who have simply helped us over a long period.
Remember that once you are a full member you are part of a truly international organisation and will be welcomed by any Lions Club worldwide.
Where do you meet?

Club officials try to keep order - and fail miserably - at a June 2008 meeting.
At Lancaster and Morecambe Lions we meet up at the Headway Hotel (http://www.headwayhotel.co.uk/) on Morecambe Promenade, normally on the second and fourth Tuesday each month.
The time is 7.30 pm for 7.45 pm start. However times and venues may change for special events and it is well worth checking with the club to save a wasted journey!
Don't you have to be 'well heeled' to join Lions?
Like any group of people there are some Lions who are financially better off than others, or simply prefer to spend more on Lions' events than others. Frankly if being a member of Lions was expensive, most of us wouldn't be members! If you go into a shop you don't have to buy everything on offer, though you could if you really wanted to. The choice is yours.
I just can't spare a lot of time and won't be able to take part in everything.
Of course some people have more time than others. Some of our members work irregular, often unpredictable, hours. They simply do what they can.
What about the family?
Your family and employment have to take priority over other things. Lions is very much a family orientated organisation and we could not do much of our work without the help and support of our families. Some of our members have three generations of their families joining us for many of our events.
Lions are fun!

Business meetings are a friendly affair (June 2008)
We in Lancaster and Morecambe Lions Club believe that Lions should be fun, whether we are working or just relaxing. Apart from our own club happenings, we also often join up with other clubs in our area. There are also regional, national, and international events if they take your fancy.
There is also absolutely no truth (well not much anyway) in the rumour that Lancaster and Morecambe members are asked to go to most events at least twice - the second time to apologise!
